While the United States and the West are bogged down fighting the Russia-Ukraine war, helping Israel in Palestine, and fighting the Houthis in the Red Sea, not to mention being in a full-blown cold war with China, the Sahel Region realized this was their time to get rid of their  neo-colonial masters.
